It's not clear how you're connecting to the Internet.  Assuming you're 
connected through your mobile provider, do they allow access to IMAP 
ports?  It may be that they deny access or, if they're not 1&1, that 
they deny access to all but their own IMAP servers.


You could try connecting over Wi-Fi to see if that makes a difference.


You could also try connecting to the IMAP ports using telnet in a shell 
on your phone.  For example:

   $ telnet imap.1und1.de 143

or

   $ telnet imap.1und1.de 993

That could give you some more information and will also determine 
whether the problem is with the connection or the mail software.
