Hmmm, a very interesting example of an successful tool for people with the
combination of technical interests and money. Worth to take a nearer look
at it...

> Or what about an open universal remote control for anything, where the
only promise is that users will contribute and lots of proposals for
applications?

Hmmm, slowly I get an idea what the secret behind its success could be.
It's not the device itself. It's not to have the "eierlegende
Wollmilchsau" (German term for an all-in-one device suitable for every
purpose). No, the essential point is the design of the interfaces and
their usability that the device has. As far as I can remember over all
previous discussions within this list, this point never had been expressed
when describing the benefits of the GTA04.

When doing marketing, did anyone bring up the fact, that...
- it has an MMCX connector? Does any other smartphone has one?
- It has an standard USB connector? All other smartphones had proprietary
ones, until the EU forced them to again creating a new one...
- Over the standard USB connector you can simply ssh in or simply drive
any other protocol that you want?
- It uses a) an widespread type of battery and b) allows you to easily
remove it? Not self-evident today!
- It still has an IR-eye, being freely programmable?

So if in addition GD spends an easy to use I2C-port to the GTA04A5 - IIRC
already announced at least for use with external keyboards - and perhaps
some other nicely to use interfaces, that could be *the* killing marketing
argument. Especially if they are also available when using an recycled
Freerunner case with only one or two more hand-drilled holes within it...
;-))

Best regards
   Sven
