Ah, OK, maybe it's a userspace problem then.

And then this brings the X display back:

It looks like there's something wrong in the X - touchscreen config.  
Xorg.0.log has lots of lines including "AlpsPS/2 ALPS GlidePoint", which 
I've never heard of before.

I'll investigate further, but I guess I should build and upgrade to 
your rc4 first anyway.
