I thought the problem was only ever with the back-light.  I'm not aware of
the display disappearing while the backlight is still on.

The patch which fixed something like this earlier is in there as
           08835565e3e341286b860bc8eb6ea960b0810ba5

That adds a call to ->platform_enable, but platform_enable doesn't do much
any more as I have the backlight device working:
    /sys/class/backlight/pwm-backlight/

When the display is blank, can you run xset against the display?
e.g.
   DISPLAY=:0 xset q

while ssh'ed in.  The output of that might be interesting.
