As far as I remember from when I looked at this, the problem with
qgpswhereabouts is that it uses the old GPSD protocol and not the new
JSON protocol. It shouldn't be too hard to fix, especially if there is
a nice JSON library available, but it isn't absolutely trivial.

Correct. This was one of my reasons for looking forward to a wheezy base.
