This means that the driver hasn't turned off GPS which continues to send data...

So the question remains why the GPS receiver isn't turned off. Maybe
a problem with the impulse lenght that is too short on a 1GHz CPU?

Something to append to my already long to-do list to look into the source
code that generates the power-down impulse...
