I think the easiest way is to create local branch from the remote. E.g. 
something like this:

git fetch gta04
git checkout gta04/mainline -b mybranch

I think the remote name "gta04" is quite confusing here. Something like this 
would be IMO much better:

git remote add neilbrown git://neil.brown.name/gta04
git fetch neilbrown
git checkout neilbrown/mainline -b mybranch
