I think it would. So here is a dd of the first 1.7mb of my sdcard
(everything after that was zeroes):

It contains the correct partition layout with 9 cylinders for the first
partition.

The second partition is not formatted (and hence zeroed).

The first partition is missing the uImage (pick any you want) but has
MLO, u-boot.bin, splash.rgb16z, menu.rgb16z and boot.scr.

dd it to your drive, copy uImage to the first partition and format the
second one to your liking.

It's okay for MLO, u-boot.bin, uImage etc but not okay for doing a git
clone or getting the debian-lxde tarball.
