It sounds a bit like a tool-chain problem to me.
What does
objdump -j __versions -s g_ether.ko
report?
I get:

As you see the first symbol listed is module_layout which has a version of
f4bfb24d, which is a crc of something I think.
I suspect you don't have that entry or maybe don't have the whole section.
