[Lenny400] Squeeze rootfs and modernising the kernel

I recently acquired a Letux 400 for a fairly specialised project and am
setting up the base system. All the existing resources work well: the
extended 2.6.24.3 kernel and Lenny rootfs.
However, I'm looking to put something a little more modern on it. At the
moment, I can put a Debian Squeeze rootfs on the SD card instead of a
Lenny rootfs and this works well enough. Having established that, I'm
looking into rebuilding the kernel with a version of GCC later than 4.3
and this is where I run into difficulties.
I noticed the 3.12-wip-letux400 branch at
http://git.goldelico.com/gta04-kernel.git
and will look into that. Is that likely to be a better approach than
attempting to merge the changes to the 2.6.24 kernel into a later release?
