[Lenny400] Some tentative changes to the mainline kernel

Hello again,

The patches previously described have been attached to this message. I'll 
happily resend them by another means if an attachment isn't usable for anyone, 
but it's probably the best way of not having them line-wrapped by my mail 
program.

If anyone can see any obvious things that prevent these changes from making a 
bootable kernel, I'd be very pleased to hear about them.
