What do you mean by "switching USB modes"?  Do you mean switching between
'host' and 'gadget' mode?

If you do, then you need a USB-OTG cable.  It is a cable with a mini-usb B
plug on one end with the 'id' pin shorted to ground, and a regular USB A
socket on the other end.
When you plug this in, the kernel notices the ID pin is grounds and switches
to host mode.
