You are pushing the extent of my knowledge here...
I believe the infrastructure to boot a kernel with a device-tree file exists
and works in mainline. i.e. it is worth trying to read some documentation
and experiment.
I also know that a lot of work is on-going in the device-tree area so you
could expect to find things that don't work yet. Whether these would be
infrastructure things or driver support things, I cannot say. Possibly both.
