Yes, a lower price could help to make it more attractive for the masses.

Getting the price down is not even a matter of connections like ras-pi appears
to have (Farnell, RS-Components). They also buy at distributors and
have it produced by some EMS.
It is simply missing number of buyers to get the money (either prepaid
or on loan basis) to produce in bigger batches.
If we could produce in batches of 1000 or 5000 units, the price
(incl. new case) can most likely go below 400 EUR for a complete
device which would of course be more attractive. This is still more
than the 99 EUR Androids which are produced in batches of millions.
But more open etc.
From the feedback for the GTA04 wishlist [1] we currently do not
see much interest in general, even if the price is not predefined.
On the other hand if I look at the number of subscribers of linuxquestions.org
and activities on comp.os.linux.advocacy, I think it should be possible
to get demand for several thousands of units per year. And we are very far
away from seeing this.
So I think we must also work on sharing and distributing our values,
so that such indifferent articles are becoming less common and even those
who already share the values of openness and freedom take more notice
(instead of considering a free SDK download for Android or iOS as
sufficiently open).
BR,
Nikolaus
