With a modern git the checkout above does the right thing and automagically
creates a tracking branch.  For older git, you may need to do

  git checkout -b master_gta04 origin/master_gta04

instead, where "origin" is the name of the remote you used.
This ensures that your new master_gta04 branch actually tracks the origin one's.

The pull is a good idea.

In my experience, separating a pull into a fetch and merge makes it clearer
what happens and where any errors arise from:

  git fetch origin
  git merge origin/master_gta04

where "origin" is the name of the remote you used.
