Electrically yes (well, not completely - it does not have a coulomb counter and HDQ).
Mechanically no: it is much bigger.

If you don't mind having two components, there are battery boxes with USB output
working as an external (re)charger. This has the positive effect that it is a real
capacity extension and not only replacement. I.e. you can still use the internal
battery.
What I don't know is if you can charge NiMH cells in such a box or you need a
third component...
