The correct place to connect external power would be VAC.
It should be at least 400mV more than the battery and less than 7V.
so 5V or 6V would be fine.

Probably best to attach it at pins 7/8 of the connected that the serial cable
goes in to.

You probably could just connect 5V to the USB port as that is all a USB
charger would do, but I think it would be better to use VAC if you can.
