Convenient app sources are definitely a big plus for any platform.

I see the GTA04 as a more trustworthy base for running Android on
(potentially, hopefully, see http://groups.google.com/group/android-kernel/browse_thread/thread/bedda8e277a7a06c).

On my current Android phone, whenever I am looking for a new App, I first check FDroid.
That's the client app for http://f-droid.org/, a FOS repository for FOSS apps.
Naturally, you can't find it in Google's store
(their store license prohibits app store apps).

It is a working, useful example of such an app source.
Not quite as feature-rich as the Google store
(no ratings - would be nice, but I can live without these,
no update descriptions - I miss these),
but it makes app selection and administration convenient enough for casual use.
It features listing, categorization, description display,
installation, uninstallation, update checking, self-update
and explicit version selection (up- and downgrades, actually needed to downgrade once).

Is there an open service interface spec for such stores?
Haven't researched this yet, and won't in the coming weeks...
Potential requirements include the above, and support for multiple platforms, and security, and ...(trailing off)
