Mumble is light weight and open source but TeamSpeak has a nice feature called 3d voice, which allows users to equalize their perceived volume and stereo balance of each other user. This is done graphically and I believe can be configured to map automatically. This could give a more realistic conversation experience. TeamSpeak also has a far more advanced user permissions system and a few more features than Mumble but it is a bit heavier and I do not believe it is open source. In any case, I do not think streaming video from a live event is necessary at this point.

A web forum, mailing list, and VoIP/IM server should accommodate a wide variety of users and encourage communication but I am concerned that these options might cause us to fall out of touch with each other. If some users only ever communicate on the forum, for example, how do they know what we've discussed on the mailing list or in voice?

Hi all,

Thank you for all your posts giving me piece of mind. I have never used
Facebook or any other social media service for the reasons laid out by
you. I feared missing a great thing. But, that doesn't seem to be the
case.

Fine. Let's keep social media at a low priority and tackle the
important things first.

Is there any means to internationalize the Munich based Stammtisch? For
those not familiar with German culture: A Stammtisch is a regular
informal round-table in a bar where you can meet and greet people, talk
nonsense and sometimes stumble into serious topics.

Would it make sense to organize a Stammtisch via VoIP, Mumble,
palava.tv ? Or have a one hour and a half window of the real Stammtisch
transmitted live to individuals scattered around the rest of the world
-- with bidirectional communication, of course?

Cheers,

Oliver
Well, in America we have meetups ( www.meetup.com ) and the like,
similar to the German version I guess, but I like the idea.

As for what communications software to use, I prefer Skype, because it
has excellent sound quality ( I talk to my friend in Greece all the
time ).and echo cancellation ( I can use it without headphones ).

Regards,
