Well, I now have got an RasPi 0W and some time to play with.
So I am trying to support it by LetuxOS as well.

For Raspbian images it is no problem - just swapping
the µSD is sufficient...

But when taking the RasPi 3B+ image the bootloader
finds and loads everything but the Kernel is not starting.

So which kernel did you use? Raspbian or some upstream?
Do you have an idea what the reasons might be?
